Long Live Vermentino: Cantina Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano

Presents San Bruzio Vermentino Superiore Maremma Toscana Doc.

The new label of the Grosseto cooperative aims to demonstrate how long refinement can give Vermentino new, original expressions.

A new creation enriches the Le Vigne line by Cantina Vignaioli Morellino di Scansano : it is San Bruzio Vermentino Superiore Maremma Toscana Doc 2023 , an unprecedented label from the Grosseto cooperative that demonstrates how time can be a precious ally for this variety.

“We had been toying with the idea of working on the long aging of Vermentino for some time,” explains Benedetto Grechi , President of Cantina Vignaioli Morellino di Scansano, “and with San Bruzio we succeeded. We want to explore all the nuances and tell the story of the versatility of this variety, which has found its ideal place in Maremma, where its characteristics can express themselves at their best. The Le Vigne line already included San Rabano Vermentino Maremma Toscana Spumante Doc and Vigna Fiorini Vermentino Maremma Toscana Doc. It was precisely the tasting of some old vintages of Vigna Fiorini that made us understand that Vermentino has an interesting aging potential. That’s where the idea for San Bruzio came from. It’s a wine that can be drunk young, but it offers extraordinary notes and sensations two or three years after the harvest.”

The new reference takes its name from the ancient rectory of San Bruzio, built around the year 1000 near the village of Magliano in Toscana (Grosseto), perhaps on the remains of a pagan temple. Today only the ruins of the building remain, but the charm of the place is unchanged, so much so that a legend says that Destiny resides in these lands.

San Bruzio is produced with Vermentino grapes , grown with spurred cordon on a silty sandstone soil. About a third of the bunches used are harvested at regular ripeness and kept in the cell, while the rest remain in the vineyard for another two weeks, to encourage the development of fruity aromas. After 48 hours of cold maceration with the skins, the free-run must is extracted and fermented; it is then aged in steel for six months together with the fine lees. Once ready, the wine is bottled starting in the month of July following the harvest.

Straw yellow enriched with golden reflections, San Bruzio Vermentino Superiore Maremma Toscana Doc 2023 is characterized on the nose by notes of broom and yellow plum, with a finish of apricot. On the palate it is full, the flavor stands out which, combined with freshness, enlivens the marked structure. The sip is long and emphasizes the savory notes perceived on the nose. The glass perfectly accompanies fish dishes, white meats or fresh cheeses.

San Bruzio will be on sale starting from March 2025 at the price of 18 euros in wine shops and in the company e-shop.
